Philosophy
The mission of the Asian Institute of Medical Studies
Healing, teaching and transformation are three faces of one compassionate, skillful and wise intent. This intent is the common motive of AIMS that we will enact specifically:
• by awakening healing in individuals, one by one, so each may re-experience happiness and wholeness;
• by teaching the Asian arts of compassionate healing, including acupuncture and Oriental medicine, so that our family of healers and practitioners may bring health and ease throughout the world; and,
• by transforming the root causes of disease and suffering within the greater context of society, environment and spirit so that all beings may re-experiennce the unobstructed joy of living.
In support of the Mission, the Institute will:
• Provide quality, diverse academic and clinical training to prepare ethical professional Asian medical practitioners possessing the skills to continue learning.
• Provide affordable quality clinical services to the public, utilizing the many Asian healing systems.
• Offer Continuing Education in both new and time honored Asian healing systems and methods.
• Increase public and allied health care awareness of the principles and practices of Asian medical systems.
• Support the development of high standards and professionalism in Asian medicine throughout our profession, the public, and allied health care.
• Promote effective, comprehensive, and compassionate health care by integrating Asian medical practices with other healing modalities.
Additional Notes
The history of the Asian Institute began in the summer of 2000 when Alex Holland, M.Ac., L.Ac., Linda Joy Stone, M.S., L.Ac., Leslie Romero, L.Ac., and Richelle Arsenault, M.B.A., C.G.F.M., decided to blend their expertise and energies towards the goal of developing a school of traditional Chinese medicine that took the principles of Mind/Body/Spirit to deeper levels of understanding. This vision formed the Asian Institute of Medical Studies (AIMS). We found a site for the school in a modern office complex with a beautiful courtyard located in the northern part of Tucson in the shadow of the Catalina mountains.
From its inception, the Asian Institute has had a strong focus on the educational needs of the Oriental medicine community in Tucson, and to this end we started providing Continuing Education to our colleagues in the spring of 2001. We also started the Friday Night Forums, a series of Public Education talks to inform the general public about the benefits of TCM and other health related issues.
The Asian Institute was approved by the State of Arizona Acupuncture Board of Examiners on April 3, 2001 and was granted a provisional license by the Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education in May 2002 to offer our two masters level degrees: Master of Acupuncture and Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. We have accepted our first group of transfer students and officially started our masters level programs in the Summer, 2001.
