Philosophy
Red Mountain Institute was established in March 1994 with a special mission: to equip the basic massage therapist with advanced skills. This means preparing them to effectively understand and treat the pain and injuries associated with soft tissue dysfunction. In other words, RMI is about raising the massage industry standard. RMI considers massage therapist to be health professionals; who are capable of addressing specific health issues and working in conjunction with other health professionals.
This vision came about as a result of seeing massage therapists questioning their capabilities and not knowing how to interact with other health professionals. RMI's goal is to prepare massage therapists as experts in the field of soft tissue dysfunction, injury and chronic pain. At the same time RMI is committed to training well-balanced therapists who can also provide luxuriously relaxing sessions and competent stress management. All of these styles are actually necessary to be successful in the industry. To stay gainfully employed it is essential that the massage therapist provide what the public wants, which is often the luxurious massage found in spas. At the same time the clients that come to the spas are frequently in some type of pain or injury scenario that a competent massage therapist can treat. It is our belief that once you've helped someone out of pain they will be forever grateful and refer their family and friends to you. (Consider this business 101.)
Additional Notes
To accomplish the goal of training therapists to do both nurturing and medically effective massage RMI has developed a unique program. We begin by teaching the basics of "appropriate touch." This includes learning not only technique, but also how to create a healthy environment, appropriate client/therapist relationships, as well as the essentials of proper body mechanics. After this we move into Deep Tissue work. At this point the program truly melds the academics of Anatomy and Physiology with the hands-on. Finally we get into the advanced techniques of Neuromuscular Therapy, Somatic Reeducation and Myofascial work. To support these classes is a thorough training in Pathology, Kinesiolgy, mindbody connection, and continued training in boundaries and ethics. The result is a highly trained professional who is effective with a variety of styles.
Graduates of RMI have gone on to develop practices in hospitals, Chiropractic offices, spas, salons, corporate headquarters, private practices, sports facilities as well as others.
The staff of RMI includes a host of professionals with a wide variety of backgrounds. These include MD's, PT's, business professionals, PhD's, speech therapists, movement specialist, not to mention the variety of specialized trainings taken in different massage and bodywork techniques which include orthopedic assessment, myofascial release, Zen therapy, Somatic reeducation, pregnancy and prenatal massage, Esalen massage, Clinical Sports massage, advanced NMT, the Feldenkrais Method, and more.
