672 CLOCK HOUR TRAINING PROGRAM
Want to work in a world-class spa, resort, or hotel? We have graduates all over the country who have done just that in places like Colorado, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, throughout Florida, California, Pennsylvania, New York, Wisconsin, Arizona, Nevada, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
Want to work in a physical therapy office, pain management clinic, chiropractic office, cancer center, spinal rehabilitation center, nursing home, osteopathic hospital? Our graduates were early trailblazers in each of these settings, and continue to find these settings rewarding and fulfilling. Maybe you prefer the challenge and significant rewards of being your own boss, setting your own hours, seeing private clients in their homes or offices? This is an often-chosen option among our graduates, and they are satisfied and enriched by that experience. Massage can be a full-time work experience or it can be done in part-time settings. There is flexibility built into this profession that is very attractive for meeting a variety of personal and financial needs.
The Therapeutic Applications of Massage Program is a 672 clock hour program. (See Calendar of Start Dates). We are excited to be able to offer our program because it presents so many opportunities to those who want to enter the profession and feel confident about their entry-level training. Our training is well-rounded with a good balance between lecture and hands-on time. The courses relate directly to massage, not to subjects such as typing. Students who successfully complete this program become certified in Basic Swedish, Integrated Relaxation Techniques, and in the highly sought-after approach to NeuroMuscular therapies we call Integrated Therapeutic Techniques. Graduates find that they are comfortable in job settings which emphasize wellness and stress-reduction, as well as settings which focus on sports or medical rehabilitation of soft tissue injuries or dysfunctions.
Institutional charges cover tuition, required texts and supportive books and products, as well as one-half gallon of Biotone lotion; basically everything you will need for our program. You will also receive four custom-designed school polo shirts, with the colors you prefer. You receive a custom-designed school bag on wheels, your school notebook, and required texts as they are needed for specific classes.
Upon successful completion of 350 hours of training (about half way point), you will receive a professional massage table with standard features, with your choice of color and table height. We are associated primarily with two massage table manufacturers (Oakworks and Custom Craftworks). Both these companies provide excellent tables, an excellent warranty, and excellence in service. Your table cannot be exchanged for monetary credit or credit towards the tuition account. Not included in your institutional charges is the fee for your licensure examination, and the charges for your license.
Class Times and Sizes
Day students attend classes Monday through Thursday, 8: 30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for a total of 24 hours per week. Completion will take 28 full instructional weeks. Night students attend classes Monday through Thursday, 5:45 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for a total of 39.5 full instructional weeks (17 hours/week).
A starting class may have up to 24 students in a class (average is 17). Should a class reach 24 students, it is divided into two classes of twelve for most hands-on instruction. They may remain together for lectures which have a maximum size of 28. No lectures have more than 28 students.
Single Focus Training
Please note when comparing our program to other vocational schools that our school focuses solely on therapeutic massage. We have been in the Tampa Bay area for more than two decades, striving for excellence in massage therapy training. Our graduates and their skill levels are known by employers in our community. All of our courses are relevant to massage as it will be practiced in the real world. Our instructors have been with us
Philosophy
Our massage therapy program strives to provide you with the excellence in entry level education necessary to become a confident therapist in a new, exciting career.
At the Humanities Center we know intuitively, experientially, and cognitively that touch is a powerful tool to enhance health and well-being.
Our mission is to provide our students with the career training necessary to practice in the setting of their choice with a high level of skill, integrity, and professionalism. We therefore provide training in both relaxation and therapeutic approaches to massage therapy.
Each year students benefit from our continual commitment to our school facility, educational program, and dedication to their learning process. We believe that our students deserve the best in facilities, curriculum, and teachers, and that our integrity depends on providing these elements.
The Goals of The Humanities Center include:
1. To provide the highest quality of career training in massage therapy.
This applies to both our core curriculum as well as our Continuing Education training.
Over the last 23 years of providing career training in massage therapy, we have:
Instituted the first supervised Internship Clinic in Florida for students to gain clinical experience. The internship program allows students not only to practice their massage techniques, but also to develop necessary clinical skills (implementation of intake forms, improvement of communication skills, etc.) and to receive evaluation on these clinical skills. The internship program is "as close as it gets" to practicing massage therapy in a work setting.
Authored copyrighted materials for every course (all lecture and hands-on courses). These materials are streamlined and focused on the information "at hand". The materials greatly aid in student understanding, and decrease the need for note taking significantly. Textbooks are used in conjunction with these copyrighted materials.
Developed PowerPoint (computer projected) presentations specific to each lecture class. The primary advantage to projecting computer driven presentations is the ability for the whole class to focus on the same image or idea.
Incorporated in-house instructional videos for review of hands-on techniques. These tapes can be viewed in the library for review by students.
Implemented in-house computer review/quizzes for the lecture course review for students to use out of class. These reviews are used by students on a daily basis after school. The reviews utilize PowerPoint, and are a great way to reinforce lecture based materials.
2. To ensure our graduates have a high success rate on the National Certification Exam.
Our excellence in training is reflected with an exceptional pass rate among our graduates on the National Certification Exam (first attempt), a rate which is higher than the national average.
3. To maintain a "single campus, single focus" mindset to our educational approach.
The Humanities Center has purposefully held to its "limit the size, increase the quality" approach to career training. Although we have graduated over 3,800 students in the past 22 years and are the largest single campus massage school in Florida, we strongly believe that in order to uphold our high expectations, we must remain restricted in size and scope. We therefore have one single campus, with one training focus and expertise.
4. To provide training which enables our graduates to work in both wellness and therapeutic settings.
Our program includes an in depth approach to wellness/relaxation massage and training in therapeutic techniques such as Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release, Positional Release, and Muscle Energy Techniques.
Our therapists are routinely recruited by local resorts such as the Vinoy Stouffer Resort and by Physical Therapists and other health care providers through our Job Placement Database, affectionately called the "Job Book".
5. To maintain a reasonable teacher:pupil ratio as to allow for a high degree of student-teacher interaction.
