The Starseed Center for Yoga & Ayurveda is one of the New York City area's premier centers for yoga, ayurveda and allied disciplines. Established in 1990, Starseed provides instruction and teacher training in yoga (200-hour Yoga Alliance approved RYT program), Reiki (Usui Shiki Ryoho lineage through the Master Teacher level) and ayurveda (through its affiliate, the New Jersey Institute of Ayurveda, which offers residential and distance learning programs leading to the practtiioner-level Diploma in Ayurveda).
The Ayurvedic Studies Program at Starseed was established in September 2003, and is intended to prepare practitioners of the ancient art and science of Ayurveda though a program of high quality, comprehensive education and training consonant with such standards as will in the near future be set by state and national credentialing authorities and professional associations outside of Ayurveda's homeland, India..
It is the program's aim to prepare Ayurvedic practitioners as well as to provide quality continuing education in Ayurveda to the medical, nursing and allied health professions and to serve as a source of health information and outreach to the larger community.
With a view to extending the opportunity for Ayurvedic professional training to a wider body of students, in January 2006 the Institute undertook the translation of its residential training program to an independent study, distance-learning based format, thus affording a flexible, economical training in Ayurveda that is of the highest quality obtainable.
Philosophy
The New Jersey Institute of Ayurveda (NJIA) at the Starseed Center for Yoga & Wellness offers an independent-study based professional level training program for aspiring practitioners and teachers of yoga and ayurveda, the estimatedly 6,000 year old healing traditions of the Indian subcontinent. This Ayurveda distance learning program comprises a series of tutored, self-study courses in the basic and clinical sciences designed to afford the highest quality of education and training for aspiring practitioners.
Areas of instruction in the program include anatomy and physiology; history and traditions of Ayurveda; pathology; theory and practice; botanical medicine; physical diagnosis; constitutional analysis; nutrition and food theory; preventive medicine, psychology and counselling, ayurvedic jytosh and manipulative therapy, inter alia.
The NJIA curriculum is structured to educate a well-trained and well-rounded practitioner of this ancient healing art, knowledgable in both its theoretical and applied facets and proficient in adapting its time-tested modalities to meet the needs of contemporary health care consumers. The philosophy underpinning the NJIA distance learning program is the aim of providing high quality, effective and economical professional Ayurvedic training to an expanded commmunity of learners, thus broadening interest in and an appreciation for Ayurvedic healing in the wider community.
The distinction awarded graduates of the professional program (involving an estimated 12 to 16 months of study) is the Diploma in Ayurveda. It is planned to offer both programs via both residential study as well as on an independent study/distance learning basis.
Additional Notes
Within the NJIA practitioner training program, the first course (and a prerequisite for the other courses in the program) is the Ayurvedic Foundation-Level Certification Course, an intensive, broad and deeply detailed initiation into the fundamental principles of Ayurveda and their application.
The Foundation-Level Certification Course is intended to serve two functions: firstly, to provide prospective Ayurvedic practitioners with a sound basis for further study of the basic and clinical sciences. Secondly, it is intended for the general public who, while not planning to continue training, nonetheless desire to take a larger measure of responsibility in caring for their own health and that of their families.
Upon completion and the successful passage of a comprehensive final examination, the student is awarded the Certificate in Ayurvedic Self-Care & Health Maintenance.
