What is an infrared electric light sauna?

Three basic kinds of saunas exist.  Infrared electric light saunas use standard, red incandescent heat lamps to supply radiant energy.  They provide color therapy by emitting red, orange and yellow light.  They also emit a wide spectrum of mainly near infrared with some middle and far infrared energy.

Our experience over four years indicates the infrared light saunas are the most powerful type of sauna for detoxification of the body due to its deeper penetration of the infrared rays and the most beneficial infrared spectrum.  You may view a longer article about them and free plans to build one at www.drlwilson.com.

For comparison, traditional saunas consist of a small room or space with an electric, gas or wood heater.  The room may also be heated with hot rocks and steam, as in the native American sweat lodge.

Far infrared saunas use ceramic or metallic elements for heating that emit mostly in the far infrared range.  Most far infrared saunas emit a limited far infrared spectrum, may emit harmful electromagnetic fields and are often far more costly than electric light saunas.

Is there a book where a person can read more about this?

Yes, there is a book entitled Sauna Therapy (2003) by Lawrence Wilson, MD.  Sixteen chapters discuss the benefits of saunas, effects on different conditions and cautions regarding sauna use.  Other sections cover the treatment protocols, construction details with free plans, a case history, several testimonials and many references for sauna therapy.

What are the benefits of an electric light sauna?

    1. Skin Rejuvenation.  Daily sauna therapy slowly restores elimination through the skin.  The skin is a major eliminative channel and the largest organ of the body.  In most people, the skin is inactive and often congested and toxic.  Reasons for this include sun damage, wearing synthetic clothing, bathing in chlorinated water and contact with hundreds of toxic chemicals in soaps, detergents, cosmetics and other products.

Excessive sympathetic nervous system activity causes blood to be withdrawn from the skin. This contributes to inactivity of the skin.   Sauna therapy is excellent for most all skin conditions and helps reverse this excessive sympathetic nervous system activity.

    2. Enhanced Sweating.  Medical studies show that almost all toxic metals and harmful chemicals can be safely eliminated through the skin.  This relieves the burden on the kidneys and the liver.  Many people, however, sweat very little, even when warm or while they exercise.  For most people, the rate of sweating increases dramatically after several months of daily sauna use.

Sweating during exercise is not nearly as effective for detoxification because exercise activates the sympathetic nervous system.  Excessive sympathetic nervous activity inhibits the eliminative organs.

    3. Exercise Benefits.  Saunas provide many of the benefits of exercise and require much less expenditure of energy.  Benefits similar to exercise include enhanced sweating, better circulation, greater oxygenation of the tissues and helping to maintain excellent muscle tone.   Repeated sauna use can reduce elevated blood pressure.  It can also improve the elasticity of the arteries and veins.  Saunas are thus most helpful for cardiovascular rehabilitation.

    4. Decongesting The Internal Organs.  Heating the body shunts the blood away from the internal organs and toward the skin.  This helps dissipate the sauna’s heat.  The effect is to relieve stagnation of the blood in the internal organs.  The cause for this congestion is often excessive activity of the sympathetic nervous system.  The movement of the blood toward the skin also stimulates the circulation.  The sinuses, joints and most other tissues all benefit greatly.

    5. Fever Therapy Or Hyperthermia For Infections.  Raising the body temperature greatly assists the elimination of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.  Many people already have a low body temperature.  For this and other reasons, they cannot overcome chronic infections.  Most of these infections are so chronic that one accepts them as normal aches and pains.  One may not know they even exist.  Common sites of infection are the sinuses, ears, eyes, bladder, throat and intestines.

    6. Eliminating Tumors And Other Mutated Cells Poisoned By Radiation Or Other Toxins.  Many abnormal cells are disabled or killed by raising the body temperature.  Tumors, for example, tolerate poorly the infrared sauna’s heat.  Raising the body temperature weakens them and may hasten their death.  Though not a conventional method for treating cancer, hyperthermia is well-researched and available in many nations.  Heat also disables or kills cells mutated by radiation or damaged by other toxins.

Why use infrared?

Infrared penetrates the skin, heating the body from the inside as well as on the skin.  Sweating begins sooner and detoxification is improved.  The sauna is effective at a lower temperature, so preheating is less needed, saving time and money.  Infrared is also an anti-oxidant nutrient.  It activates the cells, supports metabolic processes and decouples toxins from water molecules.

The infrared electric light sauna has several additional advantages.  It penetrates most deeply and emits other beneficial frequencies in the ultrasound range.  Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, MD, an early proponent of saunas and a careful researcher, believed the electric light sauna was best.

This type of sauna also provides warming and stimulating color therapy.  Red, orange and yellow assist the adrenals and the eliminative organs.  Red color therapy also helps clear the emotional body.  Everyone carries with them emotional imbalances every bit as harmful as physical toxins.

Do you have proof or studies of the effectiveness of the infrared electric light sauna?

Pamela McDougle, who has 25 years experience and is well-respected in the natural cancer treatment field, reports that she is saving about 50% more lives when the patients use an infrared light sauna.  She did not find the traditional or the far infrared saunas nearly as effective.  Also, she reports that tumors are broken down about 75% faster when the patient uses an infrared light sauna.

There are no double-blind studies available on these saunas because patients would know which type of sauna they are using.  So far, we know the light sauna appears to be safe, even when used several times daily, and we look forward to larger studies to evaluate its effectiveness.
