December 2004 Lady TENS Obstetric TENS unit for birth and pregnancy Brought to you by Horizon Industries Click Here for Horizon Industries Community Listing. Click here to purchase this product from our shopping cart.
Lady TENS are specifically designed to combat pain during childbirth and can be used in conjunction with other analgesics such as pethidine or gas and air. Totally safe, totally drug free leaving you totally in control, Lady TENS childbirth units are becoming more and more a popular choice for mothers-to-be.
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) works by sending soothing pulses across the surface of the skin and along the nerve fibers. The pulses prevent pain signals reaching the brain, just like a gate not letting anything pass. They also stimulate your body to produce higher levels of its own natural painkillers, called "Endorphins".
This unit has
an emphasis on simplicity! Everything is pre-set inside the machine,
except for the intensity (strength of the pulse) for both channels,
which can be controlled by one dial. This is believed to be the
first ever fully integrated dual channel (four pad) hand held unit.
TENS for Relief of Labor
Pain TENS is non-invasive and has few side effects when compared with drug therapy. The most common complaint is an allergic type skin reaction (about 2% of patients) and this is almost always due to the material of the electrodes, the conductive gel or the tape employed to hold the electrodes in place.
TENS will not completely eradicate or take away labor pain in the way that an epidural does. Like hydrotherapy, relaxation and breathing techniques, and narcotic analgesia, TENS can lessen the pain and make it easier to tolerate. For women who want to make every effort to avoid pharmacological pain relief (epidural or narcotic), TENS is an option that may help. Used in combination with other methods by a motivated woman, it is even more likely to do this. For women who think they may want an epidural when labor is intense, TENS can be helpful to get through the early labor until the point when it is appropriate to have an epidural placed.
